Bonds belong to pairs, not the whole company
A Bond records how two Operators relate to each other. Every pair has its own progress, so a strong relationship between Hawks and Trick does not automatically improve Trick’s relationship with Luco or a custom recruit.
EA says pairs usually begin neutral or negative. As a Bond reaches a new level, the two Operators can Cross Train and receive a permanent combat-stat bonus. At maximum Bond, the pair can unlock a more powerful Passive through special Cross Training.
Reliable ways to build a Bond
The official gameplay overview identifies three broad routes:
- Complete Tactical Missions with the pair in the deployed squad.
- Resolve Operations in ways that improve their relationship.
- Use Call for Backup between the two Operators during combat.
The current Method Indie guide also documents supportive actions such as healing as positive interaction and friendly damage as negative interaction. Those details make intuitive sense, but the result shown by the current launch build should take precedence if a later patch changes the values.
Why Backup is the efficient option
Call for Backup already improves an attack without spending AP. When the chosen helper also needs Bond progress with the attacker, one action advances tactical and campaign goals at once.
Do not select a helper only for relationship points when a mission is in danger. The best sustainable method is to deploy pairs whose combat roles naturally support each other:
- Heavy and Medic, when protection and recovery operate together.
- Scoundrel and Gunslinger, when setup feeds repeated damage.
- Scout and Sharpshooter, when reconnaissance improves a long firing lane.
These are examples of role logic, not prescribed character romances. Zero Company does not use a player-romance system for Bonds.
Cross Training and Focus progression
At the Personnel facility, Bond information sits alongside Operator stats and the Focus Tree. Increasing Bonds supplies Focus Points used to develop Talents, abilities, and Passives. A new Bond level then lets the pair select a shared Cross Training bonus.
Choose a bonus both Operators can use. A ranged-damage bonus is inefficient when one partner almost never makes a ranged attack; a general Health, movement, critical, or Overwatch improvement may serve the pair more consistently.
Because Cross Training is pair-specific, frequently changing all four squad members slows the development of every relationship. Rotate deliberately: keep one established pair together and introduce reserves beside them.
Dilemmas can change relationships
At key story moments, Hawks faces a Dilemma and every Operator weighs in. The final decision can change individual Bonds. Operations can also present choices with relationship consequences.
There is no single decision route that keeps an ideologically mixed company equally happy. Check which pairs are already fragile, which bonus is close to unlocking, and whether the narrative result matters more than the stat change. The point of the system is consequence, not a hidden “always agree” puzzle.
A simple Bond plan
Build one dependable pair for the frontline, one for ranged support, and at least one connection involving a reserve. That spreads campaign resilience without turning every deployment into a grind for relationship points.
