Talent choice is about frequency
The best Talent is the one an Operator activates during the job they already perform. A dramatic effect that appears once every few missions can contribute less than a modest defensive or damage bonus applied every turn.
Launch guides identify ten Talents in the recruitable pool. Custom recruits are not permanently trapped by the Talent shown when hired: their Talent and standard Specialization can be changed through the relevant personnel menu. Authored characters are different. Their Signature Talents express character identity and cannot be replaced in the same way.
Useful Talent patterns
Defensive frontliners
Current combat testing highlights Anticipation and Grit as strong prevention choices. They fit Heavy or another Operator whose job is to draw attention and survive it. Prevention also reduces the chance of receiving an Injury, which matters more than raw end-of-mission Health when permadeath is active.
Pair the defensive Talent with cover and displacement. Taunting every enemy while remaining exposed is not a complete tank plan.
Long-range finishers
Cold-Blooded supplies a critical-hit angle that naturally benefits an Operator attacking valuable targets from range. Sharpshooter is the obvious pairing, but the principle is broader: give critical support to the unit whose successful hit changes the encounter, not merely to the unit with the largest weapon model.
Elite and boss hunters
PC Gamer’s list includes The Bigger They Are…, which adds damage against elite and boss enemies. It is narrow during ordinary cleanup but valuable on a designated specialist who reliably attacks the toughest target.
Attention control
A Talent that manipulates enemy attention can complement a defensive build, but it also needs movement or line-of-sight denial. Pulling attacks toward an Operator is useful only if the incoming fire then hits strong cover, misses through Evasion, or cannot find a legal target.
Pair Talent and Specialization by job
| Operator job | Talent direction | Specialization examples |
|---|---|---|
| Absorb or redirect pressure | Avoidance, mitigation, attention control | Heavy, Medic secondary |
| Remove a priority target | Guaranteed critical or elite damage | Sharpshooter, Soldier |
| Clear several weak enemies | Effects triggered by repeated attacks | Gunslinger |
| Create team opportunities | Assist or setup bonuses | Scoundrel, Scout |
The examples are build heuristics, not a fixed tier list. Weapon range, secondary Specialization, and authored Signature Talent may produce a stronger alternative.
Do not recruit by Talent alone
Because recruitable Talents can be changed, appearance, species, voice, and the role missing from the current roster can be better recruitment criteria. Hire the Operator the company needs, then align Talent, Specialization, and weapon around a clear battlefield job.
