Current player limit
How to Fish supports lobbies of up to eight players as of September 2, 2026. The developer added that capacity in Patch 1.0.4. The Steam store’s short description still calls the game a 1–4 player simulator, but that wording describes the launch state; the later official patch note is the current source.
Count the host as one of the eight. The ceiling describes supported lobby size, not a guarantee that every network can connect eight people without troubleshooting.
Public and private sessions
Patch 1.0.5 added an option to host a private lobby that is joinable only through an invite. It also added a server setting for changing session type, with a restart required after that setting changes.
For a clean group start:
- Confirm that every player has restarted Steam after updating the game.
- Let the host create and fully load the world before guests join.
- Use the private invite route for a known group rather than publishing a session identifier.
- Add guests in small batches when diagnosing a failure.
- Finish the active boss hand-in and save before the host closes the session.
If joining fails
The 1.0.4 notes cautiously described black-screen and gray-screen fixes, while 1.0.10 increased the allowed connection time. Patch 1.0.9 also added a Steam connection status in the main menu. A red Steam relay indicator points to a connection problem before the game world loads.
Check version parity, restart both Steam and the game, then test a fresh lobby with one guest. Do not keep moving quest trophies around while the host is repeatedly recreating sessions.
Co-op progression etiquette
The story still advances through a single chain of quest bait, boss drops, and coordinate hand-ins. Assign one carrier for each irreplaceable item and announce when it has been stored, dropped, or delivered. Other players can focus on healing, crowd control, and damage without duplicating the hand-in.
Lobby behavior is patch-sensitive. This page reflects official notes through version 1.0.10 and should be rechecked after any networking update.
