How to Fish Beginner Guide: Your First Hour

This How to Fish beginner guide covers the Lighthouse first hour, starter rod, Empty Beer Can, Spider Crab, boat keys, Radar, and safe quest-item habits.

First-hour route

How to Fish begins with almost no useful equipment on the Lighthouse island. Your immediate goal is not a perfect collection. It is to establish the catch-kill-sell loop, finish the Lighthouse Keeper’s quest, and leave with the tools that make the next island findable.

  1. Search the island for Clams and talk to the Lighthouse Keeper before buying anything expensive.
  2. Put the first cash into the basic Fishing Rod. The current Mobalytics guide records it at $3, but treat prices as version-sensitive.
  3. Use free or inexpensive bait to catch ordinary creatures, defeat them, and sell the bodies.
  4. Buy a dependable early melee option such as the Knife or Brass Knuckles instead of spreading money across several upgrades.
  5. Purchase the Beer Can only when you are ready to turn it into the first boss trigger.

Turn the Beer Can into progress

Give the Beer Can to the Lighthouse Keeper. The Empty Beer Can that comes back is a special bait, not trash and not an ordinary sale item. Equip it on the rod and cast from the Lighthouse island to summon the Spider Crab.

Prepare food and equip your weapon before casting. The fight begins immediately after the boss is reeled onto land. Dodge rather than trading hits, then collect the distinctive boss drop and return it to the Lighthouse Keeper. That hand-in awards the boat keys.

Do not leave without the Radar

The boat can move without a Radar, but the island route is far clearer with one. Current guides record the Lighthouse Radar at $10. Buy it after the boat unlock, equip it, and follow the next colored marker instead of sailing blindly.

Four habits that prevent a stalled save

  • Keep unique bait and boss remains separate from fish intended for food or sale.
  • Inspect an unfamiliar item before cooking, gambling, or handing it to another player.
  • Save after a boss hand-in or costly purchase; Patch 1.0.6 changed when manual saves are written while retaining a one-minute autosave.
  • In co-op, decide who carries the active quest item so a physics collision does not scatter the only copy.

The exact prices and balance notes above were checked on September 2, 2026 for version 1.0.10. The opening sequence itself is supported by the official Steam progression description and current guide coverage.
