What pause changes
Combat runs in real time, but you can stop the action to assess it. That creates a different rhythm from either a turn-based queue or a game where orders must all be issued at full speed. The official combat description confirms tactical pause and positioning as core features.
Before a serious encounter, locate the pause command in your current control settings. We have not tested a launch-build keyboard layout, so this guide does not assign an unverified hotkey.
A repeatable decision cycle
Our recommended cycle is: pause, identify, order, observe. First identify which member or objective is under the greatest pressure. Then choose a response with a clear purpose—moving out of danger, changing a target, or using an available ability. Resume long enough to see whether the order achieved that purpose.
Issue fewer commands when you are learning. If everyone receives a different order at once, it becomes harder to tell which decision improved the situation.
The September 4 combat framework similarly treats deliberate pauses as part of normal play, not an emergency-only measure.
Review the cause of a loss
After trouble, separate a positioning mistake from unsuitable equipment, poor preparation or misunderstanding an enemy. Those problems need different responses. Do not assume more damage fixes all four.
Check the live wording of effects before building around them. A listed effect name alone does not establish its duration, stacking rules or effectiveness against a particular boss.
