Mortal Shell II uses Shells as playable ability sets and cosmetic variants—often called skins or Shades—as appearance changes. A new Shade does not create a ninth playable launch Shell or replace the underlying Shell’s ability tree.

Edition cosmetics
Launch materials associated the digital Devout Edition with eight Obsidian Shell skins. Retail material for the physical Revered Edition also listed exclusive cosmetics, while pre-order material referenced Obsidian and Skeletal Harbinger bonuses.
